Are all NRICH resources free?
Yes, all resources on the NRICH website are free to use by teachers, students and parents, and for non-commercial educational purposes. If you’d like to host any of our resources on your own website, or include them in any publications, please get in touch with us.
Please see our Terms and Conditions for full details.
Do I need to log in to use the NRICH website?
No, you don’t need to log in to use the NRICH website.
The only time you’ll need to provide some personal details is when you’re signing up to our Problem-Solving Schools initiative, or when you’re submitting a solution to a live problem.
Are NRICH resources suitable for all students?
At NRICH, we believe all learners should be given the opportunity to take part in rich mathematical activities as a core part of their mathematical education. Our Low Threshold High Ceiling - Maths for All guidance sets out our thinking.
What do the challenge level stars mean?
The challenge level stars refer to how challenging we expect students of a particular age group to find a problem.
So, for example, all problems in the 7-11 category assume knowledge usually met by students in that age range. The 1-star problems aim to be accessible to all, whereas the 3-star problems are likely to be challenging for most learners in that age range.
Do the problems have solutions?
Yes, lots of problems on the NRICH website have accompanying student solutions. We hope they are used to encourage students to compare their approach(es) with the published approaches.
How do I submit a solution to a problem?
We often have Primary and Secondary problems which are live (open for solution), and for these problems you can click on the 'Submit a Solution' tab. Our article Submitting a Solution explains what we are looking for when we are selecting solutions for publication.
If a student has solved a problem that has no published solutions, and is not currently 'live', they are welcome to get in touch with us to send us their solution.
Does NRICH run professional development for teachers?
Yes, NRICH offers professional development events for teachers, mainly online, details of which can be found on our Events page. Recordings of past webinars and accompanying guidance, along with other professional development resources such as articles, can be found on our Resources for Professional Development page.
As a parent, how can I support my child to develop their mathematical understanding and nurture their enjoyment of the subject?
This short video contains some guidance for parents about how to work together with children on mathematical games and activities.
If your children are Primary-aged, you could explore our set of 'For Two' resources. At lower Secondary, we have a set of 'Solving Together' resources. All the activities are designed to be tackled by a child and an adult together. They all include guidance and ways to make each activity more, or less, challenging.

More information is available in our Parents page.
How can I support a student who is gifted?
At NRICH we are very much in favour of deepening learners' mathematical understanding rather than rushing them onto 'harder' curriculum content. We recommend use of low threshold high ceiling (LTHC) tasks, which offer accessible starting points, and further follow-up challenges.
