What is the Problem-solving Schools initiative?

Problem-solving Schools is an exciting new initiative to help schools raise the profile of mathematical problem-solving and support, inspire and develop better problem-solvers.

Our Problem-solving Schools initiative offers guidance, structured resources, professional development and support for teachers wanting to embed problem-solving in their curriculum at a departmental or school level.

The Problem-solving Schools initiative is free to join and open to all schools. At its heart is our Charter, which offers a framework to help you reflect on your current practice and identify areas for development.

The Problem-solving Schools Charter highlights five key areas:

  • Vision and ethos
  • Leadership and PD
  • Curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
  • Classroom culture
  • Problem-solving beyond the classroom.

To help schools develop these areas, all Problem-solving Schools are provided with self-assessment tools to reflect on their current provision, and identify areas for development and action. Alongside these tools, the Problem-solving Schools initiative provides structured online collections of free resources, together with support, guidance and professional development opportunities, to help develop key mathematical thinking skills and mathematical mindsets.

We invite all schools who are committed to nurturing confident mathematical problem-solvers to join our Problem-solving Schools network.
