Firstly, you have to be the one that gets the total to eight. You can do this by starting with 3 and the opponent has to let you get to eight. Once you have accomplished that, it is their turn with a total of eight. They then can't stop you from getting to 13. After you get thirteen they can't stop you from getting to eighteen. After this, they can't stop you from reaching 23.
