When multiplying something by 11, you are technically multiplying the number by one two times, or 10 and 1. When you multiply a two digit number by a two digit number, you add a zero the second time.
For example,

540 = a

You are pretty much just shifting 54 one to the left in line 'a' and then adding zero below the last digit in line 'b'.
