I have hopefully been able to solve this very entertaining puzzle, I have attached my work report solution for part 1, which is within the word document in this submission.

I have used differentiation to solve this puzzle to part 1 (see word document), and was in fact very fun to solve

Hopefully, I will be able to submit another response for the second part.
