To work out the area of a rectangle you would use base times perpendicular height. So if we substitute the base for y and the perpendicular height for x the area of the rectangle would always be xy. Because a rectangle is always two congruent triangles a triangle would always be half of a rectangle so to always work out the area of a triangle you would do xy/2 because there are always 2 congruent triangles in a rectangle but to work out the area of a parallelogram you need to know that a parallelogram is always 2 triangles so the formula for the area of a parallelogram would be xy/2 x2 so it would be simplified to by xy so the formula would be base times perpendicular height
