To find the total of the 1st column you could add up the shapes. To do this, I first compared row 3 and 4. They both had 3 circles so I could tell that: square= triangle + 2. Then I compared row 1 and 2. Because row 1 had 2 triangles and row 2 had 2 hexagons but both had 2 squares I was able to tell from difference of their totals that: 2 hexagons= 2 triangles + 2 which is can be simplified to: 1 hexagon= 1 triangle + 1. So far I had found: triangle= n, hexagon= n+1 and square= n+2. Next I used row 1 to find that 2 triangles and 2 squares had an average of 7 (28/4). I knew that triangle was square- 2 so I found the two numbers closest to 7 that had a difference of 2 and added up to 14. I found that: triangle= 6 and square= 8. Then I found hexagon (because i knew that it was triangle+ 1) = 7. Then I found circle by using row 3. I took 6 (triangle) from 18 (the total) so found circle x 3. I divided that by 3 and got one circle. After that all I had to do was add the numerical values I found found of triangle, hexagon and circle X 2 to get the missing total.
