The Snowy Owls and Golden Eagles from Anston Greenlands Primary School had a great time playing the online version of Treasure Hunt and coming up with different strategies.
Some of the children thought it was a good idea to start in the middle of the grid because then you are never too far from the treasure. However, other children argued that it would be best to start at a corner because then you have a much better idea of where the treasure is and you know that there are only two possible directions you can go.
Other advice:
- Immediately use the plotting tool to find three or four points that are possibilities for the treasure. To start with, you could just go directly vertically or horizontally. Leave them on the grid, even if they aren’t correct.
- Try one direction – if it is further away, try the other side of the original point.
- If you choose two/three points that are the same number away from the treasure, find a point directly between them – think about symmetry!
- It might be helpful to remember that a single diagonal is two points.
- If it is taking a while, look for the lowest numbers on the grid.
- If you are three points away, make a diamond shape around it.
