a+a = 2a. This is because if you have a and you add another a then you can simplify a+a to 2a.
b+b=2b. This is because if you have b and you then add another b then you can simplify b+b to 2b.
2b-b=b. This is because if you have 2 of b and you take away one b then you end up with 1 b.
2a-a=a. This is because if you have 2 of a and you take away one a from that 2, then you will end up with 1a.
These are all just simply simplifying the algebraic equations into simpler forms, thus making them equal.
Therefore, this is why the problem donut is arranged like this because each end can simplify and then be equal to an adjacent problem.
