A good, quick way to find out the number at the top by only being given the bottom left-hand number is just to use the formula 8x+12 (x is substituted for the bottom left-hand number). I found this by simplifying this formula:
x + 3(x+1) + 3(x+2) + (x+3) = 8x+12
