My method is:
It starts with the smallest plant/animal or the emptiest picture and then gradually gets bigger or more stuff is added to the picture as it is developing. It isn't really maths, more science but that is my method.
It may not work for everything but it worked for both the problems on this task and will generally get you the right answer (if it is linked to this topic).
