There are ten trunks. On each trunk there are 10 branches, and 10x10 is 100, so there are 100 branches. On each branch there are 10 twigs, so 100x10 is 1000 twigs. On each twig there are 10 leaves, and 1000x10 is 10000 so there are 10000 leaves. Then the woodcutter cuts down one trunk, and if there are 10 trunks and 10000 leaves, there are 1000 leaves on each trunk, so if the woodcutter cuts down 1 trunk, that is 1000 leaves. So you would take away 1000 from 10000 which is 9000. Then he cuts off 1 branch from the tree. if there are 10 branches on each trunk, and one trunk has 1000 leaves, if there was 10 branches on 1 trunk, you would divide 1000 by 10, which is 100, so take away 100 leaves from 9000, which is 8900. he then cuts off one twig, which has 10 leaves, so take away 10 from 8900 which is 8890. then he cuts off one leaf, so 8890 take away 1 is 8889. So there was 8889 leaves left on the tree.
