The answer is 66 because each year his parents need to buy new candles.When he is one they need to buy one candle and when he is two they need to buy two candles,when he is three,three candles,when he four,four candles,when he is five, five candles and so on.Then you add them up 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11=66,so his parents need to buy 66 candles.

In the what if question the answer might be 11 because I think the candles last up 11 years but it doesn't say how many years the candle last so I might be wrong.
