This question is asking us how many rectangles there are in a metre stick. Firstly it helps that it is yellow and blue as we can tell the difference between two different rectangles which build up to make a bigger rectangle. By looking closely at the metre stick it struck me that there was a pattern. As on the furthest left yellow rectangle there is one rectangle by itself but on the one 2nd closest to the left there itself and the first one on the left which means there are 2 rectangles there so for every number counting left to right there is that same amount of rectangles. This means that there could be a formula which could be r= n x 1. n is referring to number counting furthest left as in 1 and counting along from there. So to find the number of rectangles you do the number from furthest left multiplied by 1 each time to get an addition sum which you calculate to find the total number of rectangles on a metre stick.
