This has way too many connections that I am unable to figure out. I will indeed try out this problem in much more depth, research a bit and answer my own questions about the patterns that I see. Nim is probably my favourite game since I've discovered the strategy to defeat the other person! It's very fun, especially when the other person realises they've left to move from (1,2) and they've lost. The generalisations would be fun to visualise too, especially the 3D version.
