Home city
Problem
Mohamed, Sheng, Tanya and Bharat live in different cities: Manchester, Sydney, Toronto and Bahrain.
No-one lives in a city whose first letter is the same as the first letter of their name.
Mohamed does not live in Bahrain, while Sheng lives in the city whose first letter is the first letter of the name of the person who lives in Toronto.
Who lives where?
Getting Started
How will you record your thinking and working?
You could start by noting down what is not possible.
If Sheng did live in Manchester, where would everyone else live?
How many possible solutions are there?
Student Solutions
Ong Xing and Joel from the Anglo Chinese School, Singapore, and Rebecca from West Flegg Middle School, Norfolk recognised that there are two possible answers: either Mohamed in Toronto, Sheng in Manchester, Tanya in Bahrain and Bharat in Sydney, or Mohamed in Sydney, Sheng in Bahrain, Tanya in Manchester and Bharat in Toronto.
Many people sent solutions giving one or other of the two possibilities.
