Maths Week England aims to provide young people in England with a positive image of mathematics, and to contribute in a small way to improving the national attitude towards this vital subject.
To celebrate Maths Week England, 11-17 November 2024, we have selected three tasks below, a different task for each age group. Two of the tasks have introductory videos, and one includes an interactive game.
We hope your students enjoy thinking mathematically as part of Maths Week England!
Ages 7 to 11 - Surprising Split
Share this silent video with your students:
What do your students notice? What would they like to ask?
They might want to watch the video again.
Can your students re-create this 'trick' for themselves for 54 x 11?
Does the trick work for different multiples of 11? All multiples of 11?
This feels like a magic trick, but maths can help us explain what's happening.
Challenge your students to explain why it works.
The teachers' resources for Surprising Split offer some guidance on how the problem can be used with students.
Ages 11 to 14 - Up, Down, Flying Around
Share this video with your students:
Your students can have a go at this game using the game board and cards from Up, Down, Flying Around.
Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers offers some suggestions on how to use this game as part of introductory work on directed numbers.
The game Connect Three makes a great follow-up activity.
Ages 11-16 - Rhombus It
Students can play the game below against a friend or the computer.
The winner is the first player to have chosen four dots that can be joined to form a rhombus.
Can your students find a winning strategy?
The teachers' resources for Rhombus It offer some guidance on how the game can be used with students.
