Here is the pattern we investigated:

Difference of 2:

We got a total of 60.
After we swapped it so it was 10x5s and 6x3s

We got an answer of 68.
Next we looked at 2 and 4. After doing a couple of ones like that we found that if we went in order of 1 and 3, 2 and 4, 3 and 5 to 4 and 6 that there is difference between the totals of the grid of 8 every time.

We used the same method using a gap of 1 3 4 and 5.
After we did it with every number gap we could do we found out that; with a gap of 1 there was a difference of 4 between the total of the grid, with a gap of 2 there was a difference of 8, with a gap of 3 there was a difference of 12, with a gap of 4 there was a difference of 16 and with a gap of 5 there was a difference of 20.

At the end we thought we had cracked it … and we did!
