Answer to Question E:

To find out the perimeter of this shape, we need to work out what the length of each side of the shape is. We are given one length which has the value of A, one which has the value of B and two which have the value of C.

First of all, you need to work out the value of all the vertical sides when added together. One of the vertical sides has a value of A, but the others are all separate smaller sides. However, if you add all the seperate vertical sides together, you get the answer A. There are also two other vertical sides of the shape which have a value of C. If we add both of these together, we get an answer of 2C. Therefore, the sum of all the vertical sides of the shape is 2A+2C.

After that, you need to work out the value of all the horizontal sides when added together. All of the horizontal sides are all separate smaller sides except for one, which has a value of B. If you add all the separate horizontal sides together, you get the answer of B. Therefore, all the horizontal sides of the shape add up to 2B.

Now you have to add the sum of the vertical sides of the shape to the sum of the horizontal sides. When you have done this you get the answer of 2A+2C+2B. This can be rewritten as 2A+2B+2C. Therefore, the perimeter of the shape is 2A+2B+2C.
