The Bad-Tempered Ladybird

The bad-tempered ladybird decides that he wants to pick a fight. At every hour throughout the day, he meets a different type of animal - but each time, he says that they aren't big enough to fight! At the end of the day he meets a very large animal, and decides that he doesn't want to fight anymore after all.

This book explores the animals that the ladybird meets at each hour, from five o'clock in the morning until six o'clock in the evening. The pictures of clocks at the tops of the pages can be used to reinforce the different times. There is also a context provided for some of the times of day - we see some animals that are awake at night at the very beginning of the book, as well as one animal eating their lunch in the middle of the story.

The ending of the story introduces more complex times, as the ladybird meets the blue whale at five o'clock but then meets one of the whale's flippers at five fifteen, the whale's fin at five thirty and the whale's tail at quarter to six! This could start a discussion about different ways of saying these times, as well as a discussion about how big the whale is (or how slow the ladybird is) and how long it took the ladybird to fly all the way down the whale's body.
