365 Penguins

On New Year's Day, the family has one penguin. By the end of January they have 31 penguins, and by the end of February they have 31 + 28 penguins! Throughout the year they have to work out how much money the penguin food is costing, as well as deciding whether to arrange the penguins into cubes or into boxes of 12. This entertaining story provides lots of opportunities for children to answer different problem-solving questions, and there are links to the number of days in each month, triangle numbers and cube numbers. The money questions in this book relate to dollars and the weights are given in pounds, but children could answer or come up with similar questions using other currencies and units.
