The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
This totally engaging classic, with holes in the pages showing the trail of the caterpillar, presents sequences of numbers to five, the days of the week and the life story of the caterpillar. The pictures of fruit clearly show the cardinal values of the numbers, and the increasing page sizes show the way each number is one more than the one before. There is
also an implicit invitation to count the number of things eaten on Saturday. The story could be related to finger numbers and numerals as well as to the staircase pattern of the counting sequence.
