.(ϕa)=ϕ.a+a.ϕ

Can anyone help with proving the following vector identities? I have found many texts stating them, but none with proofs:

With suitably smooth scalar field ϕ and suitably smooth vector fields a and b:

.(ϕa)=ϕ.a+a.ϕ

and

.(a×b)=b.(×a)-a.(×b)

Many thanks...

Use suffix notation. Write a={ ai }, where i=1, 2, 3. Then

.(ϕa)= i / xi (ϕ ai )

= i (ϕ ai / xi + ai ϕ/ xi )

=ϕ.a+a.(ϕ)

The curl one is similar.
