Quadric surfaces

could someone tell me what a quadric surface is?

According to the entry in MathWorld a quadric is a surface defined by an equation like:

x2/(a2+q)+y2/(b2+q)+z2/(c2+q)=1

They are a particular sort of quadratic surface.
