Why do this
problem?
This problem encourages children to work systematically and it
would be a good context in which to talk about different ways of
recording.

How will you identify each of the children?
How will you keep track of what you have done?
Possible extension
Learners could try using other numbers of children. Can they
predict the total number of pairs for a given number of
children?
Possible support
Learners could start with just four children. They might also find
it useful to use different coloured counters to represent the
children.
