A vector ${\bf v}$ is fixed by a matrix if

$$
M{\bf v} = {\bf v}
$$

The vector direction of ${\bf v}$ is fixed if there is some number $\lambda\neq 0$ such that

$$ M{\bf v} = \lambda{\bf v} $$
