On 12th May 2008, eight schools came together for a video conference on Proof, led by Steve Hewson and Toni Beardon from NRICH in collaboration with the MOTIVATE videoconferencing project. It was described as follows;
Proof and rigour in thinking lie at the heart of mathematics. This interactive day conference, aimed at those starting C1 mathematics (the first core module of advanced study in the UK), will allow students to explore these useful and fascinating ideas with the help of several problems from the NRICH website. The day will be hands-on and interactive, with
students working on problems and sharing their thoughts and ideas.
Eight schools joined us from five locations in England and The Cape Academy and COSAT in South Africa. The students were just beginning their A-levels or equivalent.
The day was made up from a sequence of small talks followed by problem solving sessions in which the students worked on these problems from the NRICH site:
Feedback from teachers and conference organisers:
"Thanks very much for yesterday - I thought it went really well, and that the students were really on the ball throughout."- Motivate organiser
"Many thanks for today - we really enjoyed it! We are starting proof by induction in the next couple of days so this was perfect. Thanks again."
"Hi Thanks for the well organised video- conference. My learners at COSAT actually enjoyed all the activities. The activities were so structured that they brought fun to learners. We look forward to having things in future"
"The [students'] mathematical language has improved and they are more careful with explanations of their work"
"It was a very good experience which we hope to repeat"
"They [the students] learnt proofs for their enrichment since they don't do it in their curriculum but find it confusing at university"
"The conference was beneficial since it helped me to recap what l learnt long back on proofs"
