'Amazing Alphabet Maze' printed from https://nrich.maths.org/

Show menu

Why do this problem?

This problem could be introduced as a transition between literacy and numeracy lessons. As well as providing practice with the order of the alphabet, this problem also involves maths by using pathways. It requires careful consideration because there appears to be several options from each cell. Again, a moment of reflection and observation helps children to avoid rushing at the task and literally going down the wrong path!

This sheet gives six copies of the maze.

Key questions

What is the next letter of the alphabet after that?
Can you see another copy of that letter that you could move to instead?

Possible extension

Learners could write a route to follow which says whether you should go up or down and to the left or right.

Possible support

Suggest writing out the alphabet in order before starting on the problem. This sheet gives six copies of the maze which can be used to work on.
