# NRICH Projects: Number Rules, Functions and Graphs - April 2010, All Stages

This month's NRICH site looks a little different - we are offering starting points for projects along with problems which have been developed from learners' conjectures and questions.

Working on these projects gives learners opportunities to work together, discuss ideas, develop conjectures of their own, and suggest new lines of enquiry.

## Problems

### Becky's Number Plumber

##### Stage: 2 Challenge Level:

Becky created a number plumber which multiplies by 5 and subtracts 4. What do you notice about the numbers that it produces? Can you explain your findings?

### Exploring Simple Mappings

##### Stage: 3 Challenge Level:

Explore the relationship between simple linear functions and their graphs.

##### Stage: 4 Challenge Level:

Explore the relationship between quadratic functions and their graphs.

### Geometric Parabola

##### Stage: 4 Challenge Level:

Explore what happens when you draw graphs of quadratic equations with coefficients based on a geometric sequence.

### Inverting Rational Functions

##### Stage: 5 Challenge Level:

Consider these questions concerning inverting rational functions

### Rational Request

##### Stage: 5 Challenge Level:

Can you make a curve to match my friend's requirements?

## Projects

### How Many?

##### Stage: 1 Challenge Level:

This project challenges you to work out the number of cubes hidden under a cloth. What questions would you like to ask?

### Become Maths Detectives

##### Stage: 2 Challenge Level:

Explore Alex's number plumber. What questions would you like to ask? Don't forget to keep visiting NRICH projects site for the latest developments and questions.

### Charlie's Mapping

##### Stage: 3 Challenge Level:

Charlie has created a mapping. Can you figure out what it does? What questions does it prompt you to ask?

### Alison's Mapping

##### Stage: 4 Challenge Level:

Alison has created two mappings. Can you figure out what they do? What questions do they prompt you to ask?

### Steve's Mapping

##### Stage: 5 Challenge Level:

Steve has created two mappings. Can you figure out what they do? What questions do they prompt you to ask?
