Early Years Foundation Stage Trial Activities

Challenge Level: Challenge Level:1

Below you will find links to six activities designed for use in Early Years Foundation Stage settings.   They have been developed with the current Early Years Foundation Stage profile assessment scales in mind.

We have adopted two different styles of presentation: some of the activities are set out in coloured boxes and some in table format.

Some of the activities are accompanied by three observation sheets.   One of these sheets uses informal language, one uses informal language and references the assessment scales and the third uses language directly from the assessment scales.

We hope to create more activities like these in the future.  However, we want to make sure they are useful to you and so would welcome your feedback.  Please use our Early Years blog to tell us what you think, or email enquiries.nrich@maths.org.  We would really appreciate hearing your opinions:

  • Would the activity work with your children?
  • How could we improve the activity itself or the support for practitioners?
  • What do you think about the style of presentation?
  • Is an observation sheet helpful?  If so, which one did you prefer and why?
If you are able to try out any of the activities with a group of children, it would be fantastic to hear how it went.  If you were able to send us photos of your children engaging in the task, or anything they create, we would be delighted to receive them.  (If you have permission for us to publish what you send on NRICH, please do let us know.)

Here are the activities:

Stringy Loops
Building Towers
Incey Wincey Spider Game
Making a Picture
Paths
Snake Timing or Caterpillar Measuring (these are very similar activities but have different mathematical foci)
