Painted cubes investigation

I am doing a project about the numbers of cubes in a larger cube, and if I painted the larger cube how many cubes inside it would have 1 face painted, 2 faces painted, 3 faces painted or no faces painted. I would like to the know the n rule for all of them.

Think about where the small cubes with three painted faces occur on any cube.

Then the same with the two painted faces, then with the single painted faces.

Then think about constructing a formula.
