Quick tips to make a science classroom maths-rich

  1. Be positive about mathematics at all times.
  2. Encourage a safe learning environment where it is OK to be stuck and to think through difficulties.
  3. Model mathematical problem solving in action: work through problems rather than just reading out answers.
  4. Make displays and materials which emphasise the fundamental importance of mathematics in science.
  5. Be aware that there are different styles of mathematical thinking and that different ways to solve problems can be equally valid.
  6. Share materials between maths and science classroom.
  7. Encourage quick checks of equations, answers, units and physical interpretation at all times.
  8. Encourage an open environment where students discuss work and help each other.
