The NRICH Project aims to enrich the mathematical experiences of
all learners. To support this aim, members of the
NRICH
team work in a wide range of capacities, including providing
professional development for teachers wishing to embed rich
mathematical tasks into everyday classroom practice. More
information on many of our other activities can be found
here
.
On this website you will find thousands of our free mathematics
enrichment materials (problems, articles and games) for teachers
and learners from ages 5 to 19 years. All the resources are
designed to develop subject knowledge, problem-solving and
mathematical thinking skills. The website is updated with
new material on
the first day of every month.
For guidance on how to find the right resources for you, go to the
Help
section of the site.
This month
This
month's mathematical theme is Interpreting and Evaluating: Our
new problems involve aspects of the process of interpreting the
information in a question and examining in various ways the
solution or methods used to get the solution. For example, are the
assumptions and arguments made correct or appropriate? How does the
solution relate to the initial problem? Can we make sense of
someone else's finding? Can we compare strategies used? The 'Notes'
accompanying each problem are there to help give teachers an
insight into how 'Interpreting and Evaluating' might happen in the
classroom and lead to rich mathematical activity and discussion. A
list of the themes of previous issues can be found
here .
In particular:
Last year we were able to work on an interesting project with
four classroom teachers using funding from the Rothschild
foundation. You can read the report from the first of our 'teacher
fellows'
here

News update
We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new NRICH team
member: Alison Kiddle has just joined us from teaching in secondary
schools and will mainly work on developing the Stage 4 aspects of
the NRICH project.

Finally, we would like to wish you
all a very happy new year 2009.
