Out and about with the team in November

Liz
- launched an
exciting new project for primary teachers in Devon in
conjunction with Devon Education Services. The participating
teachers worked on the
Magic Vs problem with Liz, reflecting on what makes this
problem a 'rich task'.
- led two video conference days with Motivate. Each conference
focused on mathematical games and was aimed at 8-10 year olds. You
can find out what we got up to on the Motivate
website .
- worked with Michael Hall (Haringey LA) during the second
curriculum development day of the
Creativity and Confidence Project . Teachers on the project
reported back about the NRICH activities they had tried with their
classes. We grappled with several important issues that arose in
discussion - that games can offer accessible starting points for
all children; that hint cards and mini-plenaries can provide ways
to support children as they work on problems; that it is often
appropriate to record 'evidence' using photographs or by annotating
plans as opposed to expecting lots of written recording from
children.
- continues to develop primary resources for the website with
other members of the primary team.

Jenny
- As part of the Engaging
Mathematics For All project, Jenny visited a number of schools
and worked with staff on planning and delivery. At Thomas Deacon
Academy in Peterborough, Jenny was filmed using the problem
Magic V's, a problem published on the site in November. The
recording was used for staff development at the end of the
day.
- Ran one of the workshops on the
Enriching
Mathematics project in Tower Hamlets.
- Taught two sessions on problem
solving on one of the masters courses in the Faculty of
Education.
- Ran a full-day workshop for Subject
Leaders in Telford.
- Attended a public engagement seminar
in Birmingham.

Steve
- Started work on creating curriculum mapping documents for the
applied A-level mathematics modules.
- Spent a lot of time on site content development, technical
issues, developing the new website and working on new resources
which will appear over the next few months.
- Spent some time using and thinking about ways in which AskNRICH
could be developed to be even more effective.
- Tidied up lots of loose ends concerning the bioNRICH resources.
The bioNRICH
project was launched on the NRICH site on 1st December.
- Spent time thinking about the structure of engNRICH, a section
of the website which will be used to provided mathematical
activities relevant to the study of engineering.

Other Activities
In November we relaunched the NRICH
website with a greater emphasis on making clear what we do and
adapting the layout to meet the needs of our users. We have
received some very positive feedback so far and are beginnig to
address some of the small things you have suggested we change.
However, this process is ongoing and we would really like to
know:
1. What features of the new site do
you particularly like?
2. What features of the new site do
you not like?
3. What changes could we make to
improve the new site?
4. Have you had any problems
accessing material on the new site?
5. What level of maths are you
studying or teaching?
Please email any comments to
Steve Hewson . Thanks.
Why not take
a look at the NEW BioNRICH section of
the site.
