Four-digit Targets

Stage: 2 Challenge Level: Challenge Level:1

Remember you had to use each digit once and once only in this problem - we had quite a few solutions which didn't stick to this rule unfortunately.

Jennifer and Lauren from Echline Primary School told us:

We made sure we didn't use a single number twice by scoring them out as we went along, which gave us these answers:

Largest odd number: $7331$
Largest even number: $6642$
Largest multiple of $3$: $2985$
Smallest multiple of $5$: $1005$
Number closest to $5000$: $4879$

Matthew from Maidstone Grammar School had a different set of numbers:

$9765$ Largest Odd Number
$9876$ Largest Even Number
$8442$ Largest multiple of $3$
$1330$ Smallest multiple of $5$
$5012$ Nearest closest to $5000$

Ellie from Strand-on-the-Green Junior School sent another set of numbers:

Largest odd number: $9987$
Largest even number: $8766$
Largest multiple of $3$: $5541$
Smallest multiple of $5$: $1200$
Number closest to $5000$: $4332$

It looks to me as if Matthew's numbers are closer to their 'ideal' numbers than Jennifer and Lauren's, perhaps. How about comparing Ellie's with Matthew's? What do you think?
