Maths Buzz

Collaborative reasoning challenges developed with BEAM

Working in pairs or small groups, children use their reasoning skills to figure out how to organise a collection of picture cards. Can they work out the order of the racing robots or arrange the hats on the shelves? Children will develop their speaking and listening skills and their problem-solving abilities as they work together to sort out the clues and deduce the solutions. The Brain Buster Maths Boxes

Innovative whole-class kits developed with BEAM

These boxes have everything to get your class involved in a mathematical challenge: A4 problem cards for pairs to share (or you can print out multiple copies from the CD-ROM); enough equipment for a class of children working in pairs on the same problem at the same time; a teachers' book and a CD-ROM of the problems, activity sheets and notes - all in a neat storage box. There are problems about finding all the possibilities, diagram problems and visual puzzles, problems involving finding rules and describing patterns, and logic puzzles. Each problem has an extension. There's help in encouraging children to explain their methods and in analysing their strategies.

'Excel at Problem Solving' is the fourth in the series of mathematics enrichment titles (see below) developed by the NRICH team and published by Cambridge University Press. These spreadsheet activities support problem solving across the secondary mathematics curriculum. The publication consists of a teachers' guide and CD-ROM containing an extensive collection of ready-made spreadsheets to support each activity and extend mathematical thinking. The teachers' guide details 23 problem-solving activities arranged in a trail progressing in difficulty. Each activity focuses on a specific skill or strategy that develops a particular aspect of problem solving. The full supporting notes and CD-ROM for teachers include useful questions, prompts and hints for students and possible outcomes for each activity.

'Visualising' is the third in the series of mathematics enrichment titles (which includes 'Generalising' and 'Working Systematically' - see below), developed by the NRICH Team and published by Cambridge University Press. The publication consists of a teachers' guide and a CD-ROM of pupil activities, teachers' notes, animations and interactivities, and is ideal for KS2 and KS3. The teachers' guide details 17 problem-solving activities arrnaged in a trail, each one developing the skill of visualising. In addition, the notes contain ideas for 16 further visualisations along with useful questions and prompts to guide discussion.

Exploring Circles, the perfect companion to the Exploring Squares CD-ROM, is now available. This new CD-ROM is built around a collection of 25 attractive mathematical posters on the theme of 'circles'. The intention is that pupils will discuss and share insights about what they see in individual posters, with the potential for going on to use them as a focus for investigative activities.
