Why do this problem?
This activity is a simple problem to be solved using the
pupils' knowledge of addition and/or multiplication.
Possible approach
Some youngsters will do best if they see the numbers presented
as items that they can count. Seeing them grouped as indicated in
the problem will be a good catalyst for discussion.

Tell me about the totals you've found.
Possible extension
Ask the youngsters to produce similar questions
themselves.
