Why play this game?
This
game can be played to speed up recognition of equivalent
fractions, decimals and percentages.
Possible approach
Play the game with the class at the interactive white board,
to explain the game and revise the subject.
Ask pupils to play the game on computers, or with printed out
cards - seeing how quickly they can clear the cards.
Bring the class together and ask for any tips / strategies /
special things to remember that help with the game. Ask if
the cards are too easy, too hard, what else could have been
on the cards.
Ask pupils to make a memory card game, to practise fraction /
decimal / percentage equivalence. Suggest that they make it
difficult but not impossible for their class. You could
stipulate that pupils' games turn 3 cards on each go, and try
to find a matching triple (fraction / decimal / %)
Demonstrate
Fraction and Coins Game and
Fraction and Percentage Card Game on the interactive white
board, to suggest ways to make the game easier / harder.
Key questions
When you see 0.3, what are you thinking / looking for?
Which cards are easy / difficult?
Possible extension
Possible support
Allow pupils to keep a record of the value of the cards that
they have turned.
Ask pupils to design a game with fewer cards, but with the most
important facts.
