Why do this
problem?
This short problem requires children to be able to convert
centimetres to metres, to caculate using units of distance and it
will consolidate their understanding of circle
circumferences.
Key questions
What does circumference mean?
Show me where the circumference of this circle is.
How many centimetres are there in a metre ... in two
metres?
How many metres are there in a kilometre?
Which wheel will turn the most during the journey?
Possible extension
Learners could tackle the
Bike Ride problem which also requires them to use time as well
as distance.
Possible support
Some children may find it helpful to find a toy with wheels or a
wheel from a construction set, then to mark a point on the wheel
and watch it turning.
